Alternattiva Demokratika has expressed concern that the electoral commission has not yet held any discussions on the pending European elections.

It said no steps are yet being taken to ensure voting rights for EU citizens residing in Malta and Gozo, as requested by the European Union.

AD's general secretary, Stephen Cachia had written to the commission to ask for AD's participation in the electoral process and to enquire what steps were being taken to ensure that EU citizens living in Malta would be able to vote in the elections. In his reply, the secretary of the electoral commission informed Mr Cachia that no discussions have yet been held on next June's European elections.

"It is a shame that while the other two political parties have already started legal procedures to strike off hundreds of potential voters from the electoral register in the light of these elections, the electoral commission has not even started to prepare for this electoral appointment," he said.

"It is also important to note that citizens from other EU countries who reside in Malta can vote in these elections, so a new electoral register has to be prepared for these elections".

Mr Cachia also called on the electoral commission to ensure that all Maltese living in the 25 countries of the enlarged EU have their right to vote safeguarded.
