Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said the over 700 students attending courses at the Institute for Tourism Studies had made a wise choice in selecting the hospitality and tourism industry in which to base their career.
He said tourism was one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world, and also offered a wide variety of different jobs to suit every interest, from technical to managerial level.
He was speaking yesterday at the ITS graduation ceremony, during which he gave an overview of the institute's achievements in the past year.
The institute is keeping pace with the rapidly changing needs of the industry. It has introduced new computer-based training courses in front office and travel agency global distribution system into its programmes.
The institute continued with its staff development programme in conjunction with the University of Malta and 13 assistant lecturers are presently undergoing the undergraduate course in Tourism Studies Education.
The local and international internship programmes are also giving positive results.
A total of 123 students graduated: 17 were awarded a diploma in Hospitality Management; 13 in a diploma in Hotel Operations; three in Hotel Operations; 22 in Accommodations Operations; nine in Accommodations Operations; 24 in a diploma in Food Preparation & Production; three in a certificate in Food Preparation and Supervisory; three Certificates in Food Preparation and Production; seven in a diploma in Food and Beverage Service and 22 in a certificate for Food Preparation and Service.
