Two US soldiers were wounded, one seriously, when a renegade Afghan policeman threw a grenade at a US military vehicle in a crowded market in the southern city of Kandahar yesterday, officials said.

Another policeman and a local bystander were also slightly hurt in the attack in the centre of the city as four US military vehicles were driving through, Kandahar's intelligence chief General Mohammad Salim told Reuters.

A senior district police officer, Gulalai, said one of the US soldiers had his leg blown off.
