The Schola Cantorum Jubilate choir of Xaghra recently participated in the Rencontres Musicales de Mediterranée, an international music festival held in Bastia, Corsica.

Sponsored by the Gozo Ministry, and accompanied by pianist Paul Portelli of Qrendi, the choir performed in a number of theatres and churches in Corsica. Mr Portelli played a number of his own works, including Is-Sliema, which was performed by the choir's director, Mro Colin Attard, and soprano Marouska Attard.

The festival - which featured musicians from prestigious conservatoires in Italy, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Greece, and also choirs from Tunisia, Spain and Egypt - reached its peak during a gala concert held in a theatre in the town hall, attended by over a thousand persons. The concert came to an end with each group singing the local hymn He un'Isula, which was conducted by Mro Attard.
