A brief but intense hailstorm on Wednesday night damaged crops in the Bahrija and Tas-Santi area.

A grower who had a field in the limits of Bahrija said that crops in his field, including tomatoes, marrows and lettuce, were destroyed by the hail, which at times was as large as marbles.

"The field seemed to have been flattened by a mower," he said.

The hailstorm at about 3 a.m. lasted less than 10 minutes - and was localised in that area.

A number of growers were hit. Among the crops destroyed were cabbages and cauliflowers.
