Shotokan Karate School of Malta (SKSM) members recently took part in an international Karate Open Championships, in London, which saw the participation of 490 martial artists from 39 teams hailing from 16 different countries.

The SKSM team did well to finish first overall on points besides earning eight other medals.

The Maltese group included Chris Galea, Lucienne Galea, Simon Gauci, Michael Attard, Barbara Caruana, Joanne Attard, Marvin Giordmaina, Lydia Schembri and Steve Polidano.

There were first placings for Schembri, Chris Galea and Attard in their respective categories in the championships.

The team turned in an almost perfect display of synchronised Kata, finishing second, just 0.1 points behind the English gold medallists.

Schembri and Chris Galea won two other silver medals and the haul was completed with two third-place finishes for Caruana and Polidano.
