The granting of a certificate by the university during graduation carried a moral and ethical responsibility that could not be taken lightly, Department of Chemistry lecturer Emmanuel Sinagra told graduands at their graduation yesterday evening.
Speaking about the Benefits and Responsibilities of a University Education, Dr Sinagra said that whatever the field of studies, the certificate was a licence to take decisions that would affect people's lives.
"It is also important that learning does not end with graduation. Graduates must accept responsibility for lifelong learning and continuing education.
"In a world that is continuously changing, all areas of study are seeing rapid developments and whatever the profession, one needs to keep up with these developments," Dr Sinagra said.
He said the major benefit that a university education should give a student was the ability to think. Students were taught how to approach problems analytically and creatively. By using imagination and creativity one could resolve problems more efficiently, he said.
"Given that university gives students the skills of problem solving and interpreting information, I cannot accept the criticism that is sometimes levelled at university studies that they do not prepare graduates for the real problems in real jobs, or that university studies shelter students from real life.
"University even prepares students for the frustration of trying to find a parking space in the morning! Seriously though, when employers employ a graduate they are employing someone with precious tools," he said.
A university graduate was an important and versatile commodity in the labour force and an asset in industry and society in general. This is why it was wise of the state to invest in giving more people a university education, Dr Sinagra said.
