The Malta Tourism Authority's enforcement directorate has fined or taken legal action against more than 120 operators over the past year.

In most of the cases, operators, including hotels, catering establishments, travel agencies, dive centres and host families, were found to be operating without a licence.

Twenty-six owners of unlicensed holiday furnished apartments were also fined, the MTA said yesterday.

The MTA's enforcement directorate said that anybody caught operating without a licence, or not in conformity with licence conditions, can be fined up to Lm1,000 by the MTA itself, while the courts can impose heavier fines ranging from Lm500 to Lm10,000, if found guilty.

The directorate can be contacted on tel. 2316 0601.
