The government plans to install closed circuit television cameras in rural areas to deter litter offenders.

The announcement was made ahead of this year's edition of the Clean Up the World campaign, which will be launched on Tuesday, on the theme You make all the difference.

The campaign is an international one, with the local events organised by the Ministry of Resources and Infrastructure and the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment.

Twenty-four local councils intend to clean up a number of sites in their neighbourhood and the organisers are appealing to the army, the Department for Civil Protection, schools and private organisations to join the drive for a cleaner environment.
