BirdLife Malta is launching a tree adoption campaign in which public and schools can adopt a tree at Foresta 2000, in the limits of Ghadira.
Foresta 2000 is an afforestation project being carried out by BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Helwa and the PARC unit of the Rural Affairs and Environment Ministry.
The aim of Foresta 2000 is to recreate a swathe of Mediterranean woodland in an area which has been substantially degraded by human activity.
The area is the northern slope of Ghadira valley.
Tree-planting will take place annually at this site until the hillside is turned into a patchwork of forest and maquis habitat.
The project will involve the planting of hundreds of thousands of trees and shrubs along a detailed plan. Over 1,000 trees have already been planted by volunteers from the two NGOs and PARC personnel. The promoters are however eager to involve more participation from the public.
For Lm7, individuals, companies, businesses and other groups can now sponsor the planting and maintenance of a tree at Foresta 2000. Schools have a special rate of Lm5.
More information about the campaign can be obtained from BirdLife Malta on 2134 7646.
