In an effort to instil a waste separation culture, WasteServ Malta Ltd, within the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure, has added another eight bring-in sites situated in Balzan, Safi, Rabat, San Gwann, Naxxar, Lija, Zebbug and Mosta.

This brings the total number of bring-in sites situated in various localities in Malta to 24. Plans are also in hand to have a bring-in site in every locality in Malta and Gozo by the first quarter of 2004.

This weekend, WasteServ has also initiated an intensive educational campaign aimed at increasing the awareness about the need to separate waste, as well as encouraging the use of bring-in sites.

Speaking at the start of this educational campaign, WasteServ chief executive officer Ing. Vincent Magri said: "Our aim is to give as much information as possible about the proper use of these bring-in sites and how these sites are a key element in the Government's national waste management strategy.

"Through this campaign we are also encouraging local councils to take an active part in this campaign by providing bring-in site facilities for their residents."

Bring-in sites are recycling facilities, which consist of four containers, where the public can deposit segregated recyclable materials.

The containers are colour coded: blue for plastic, brown for glass, black for metal and white for paper. After collection the recyclable fractions are taken to the Sant'Antnin Waste Treatment Plant where further separation takes place.

The recyclable materials are then directed towards recycling. More information about bring-in sites and their use can be obtained by calling the WasteServ freephone number 8007-2200.
