A monument in memory of former Labour finance minister Guzé Abela (1922-1995) was unveiled in the main square of Dingli, also named after the politician, by his cousin, mayor Joseph M. Abela, yesterday.

The monument cost some Lm1,000 which was raised by the Kumitat Tifkira Guzé Abela from various private, social and political organisations. Dingli council also forked out some Lm500 for the pedestal. A lot of the work connected with the monument was done by volunteers.

The council will also continue to look after the upgrading of the square.

The unveiling ceremony of the bronze monument, the work of sculptor Anton Agius, was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony.

Notary Abela was elected to parliament in 1950 and continued being returned (except in 1962) until 1976. He had resigned from parliament in 1979 and died on September 7, 1995, aged 73.
