Initial positive step

It was a pleasure to read the article "Measures for Paceville's social re-engineering" (November 5).

First, let me congratulate all the participating parties (St Julian's local council and the GRTU) on their initiative to issue a by-law that prohibits people from walking around in Paceville with bottles and glasses. The impetus to ameliorate the current situation is the first step towards getting things done.

Paceville, Malta's major entertainment centre, needs to be a place where individuals can enjoy themselves in a secure environment. Sedqa sees this as an initial positive step, awaiting others that are vitally important if we want to protect our young people. This initiative should also serve as a guide for other local councils, especially those in localities with a concentration of entertainment outlets. This offers a safer environment by reducing the risk of serious accidents outside the places of entertainment.

By enforcing this by-law, the risk of young people under 16 years consuming alcohol outside bars should be diminished - the current law prohibiting sale to underaged persons needs only enforcement.
