I have read with great interest the article relative to "Amnesty demands asylum-seekers' release". It is well and good, and possibly very simple, for Lars Olsson, who I understand is a refugee officer at Amnesty International in London, England, to demand that Malta release all asylum-seekers.
Can anyone imagine what would happen if tiny Malta decided to accept without question any asylum-seeker who goes there to stay?
Mr Olsson knows, more than most people, that there are millions of people who, through no fault of their own, live in miserable conditions, of one type or another and who, given the least chance, would love to go and seek asylum in a country like Malta.
Release them! Where? How many shall Malta take in, 100,000, 200,000, half a million? I wonder what Mr Olsson would say if we asked him how he would feel if Malta "shipped" every asylum-seeker that reaches its shore, to, let us say, London. I am sure London, or the United Kingdom as a whole, can better sustain an influx of new people than tiny Malta.
