Graffitti group said the death of Algerian immigrant Abdul Hakim Ghernout at the police depot in Floriana on Monday confirmed the "shocking and appalling conditions" mentioned by Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Alvaro Gil-Robles in his report about detention centres in Malta.
Graffitti also urged the government to review its policy of detention and to see whether it was violating human rights.
The group accused the government of failing to create a structured system for asylum seekers such as hostels that would be run by non-governmental organisations.
