John Camilleri is the new mayor of Mtarfa after three local councillors backed a vote of no-confidence in the former mayor Josephine Abela yesterday.

The no-confidence motion was moved by Mr Camilleri, the former deputy mayor, who was elected on a Labour Party ticket, and the two Nationalist councillors in the five-member council, Godfrey Muscat and John Said.

The motion also nominated Mr Camilleri for mayor and Mr Muscat for deputy mayor.

Yesterday's vote was originally meant to have been taken on October 13 but Ms Abela, who represents Labour, had decided to postpone the meeting after it was disrupted by members of the public in attendance.

Mr Camilleri was barred from representing the Labour Party after he had moved the no-confidence motion.

Before the sanctioning of Mr Camilleri by the Labour Party the Mtarfa council had a Labour majority, but with Mr Camilleri no longer representing the party that majority has been lost.

The other Labour councillor is Salvu Abela.
