BirdLife Malta will once again open the Ghadira Nature Reserve for the public during weekends as from Saturday.

The reserve offers refuge for a wide variety of fauna, while several species of flora can also be observed.

BirdLife said that at the moment the first wintering birds have already set up home at the reserve and among others are a couple of black-necked grebes (Blongun Sekond) and little grebes (Blongun Zghir).

These birds feed on killifish (buzaqq), which are abundant in the reserve, and which the birds catch by diving and swimming several metres under water.

The reserve will open on Saturdays and Sundays until May (except public holidays) between 10.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.

However in December and January opening times will be between 9.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.

Entrance to the reserve is free.

People are accompanied for a walk along the nature trail that eventually leads to a bird watching hide.

The Ghadira Nature Reserve is managed by BirdLife Malta on behalf of the government.
