An anthropoligist and two artists were last night presented with the first Cultural Recognition Awards by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts.

The awards went to social anthropologist Jeremy Boissevain and Maltese artists Antoine Camilleri and Gabriel Caruana, who were recognised for their outstanding lifelong contributions to culture and the arts.

Culture Minister Jesmond Mugliett made the presentations at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valletta.

Prof. Boissevain has written a number of books and papers about the Maltese way of life spanning 40 years. His best known is his book Saints and Fireworks (1965, 1993), in which he studied the connection between village feasts and politics.

Mr Camilleri is one of Malta's most established artists. He was once quoted as saying "I think and believe, art is love".

Mr Caruana is one of the pioneers of modern art in Malta, finding recognition both here and abroad. His works are distinguished by bold forms and deep colours.
