Over a third of the occupational accidents in the three month period between July and September this year involved the manufacturing sector, Labour spokesman for industry John Attard Montalto said.

Compared with the same three months last year, this was an increase of seven per cent, he said.

In all, 438 men and 43 women were injured.

The majority of those injured were aged between 25 and 34, which showed that the majority of accidents were not the result of inexperience.

Dr Attard Montalto said it was essential for employers to provide all safety measures and training, to reduce the number of accidents as far as possible.
