Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers will deliver the inaugural lecture of the 15th Master of Laws degree course in international maritime law offered by the International Maritime Law Institute.
The lecture, entitled Milestones in the Legal Career of an Ancient Mariner, will be given at the institute at the university on Friday at 5 p.m.
Lord Phillips was appointed Judge of the High Court of Justice, Queen's Bench Division, in 1987 where he sat in the Commercial Court and also presided over the Barlow Clowes and Robert Maxwell prosecutions. He was promoted to the Court of Appeal in 1995 and elevated to Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 1999.
Lord Phillips was elevated to Master of the Rolls and Head of Civil Justice in 2000. As Master of the Rolls he is responsible for the deployment and organisation of the work of judges in the Court of Appeal Civil Division, of which he is the president, and he presides judicially in one of its courts. Lord Phillips also sits in the House of Lords.
Among other positions, Lord Phillips is a visitor at Nuffield College, Oxford and at University College, London. He is also Honorary Fellow of King's College, Cambridge.
