PN calls for Zebbug councillor's resignation
Nationalist MPs of the seventh district yesterday called for the resignations of Labour councillor and former Zebbug mayor Dominic Zammit and executive secretary Francesca Pace Gambin, after they were found guilty of breaking regulations on tenders and finances connected to the construction of culverts.
The Nationalist MPs said that instead of solving the problems of flooding in the Tal-Grazzja area, the two made matters worse.
This was revealed in a report by the auditor-general, presented in Parliament last Monday by Justice and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg.
The Nationalist MPs, together with Nationalist councillors and the Zebbug PN committee, are also condemning current Labour mayor Joseph Ciantar who, at the time, had fully supported the decision taken by Mr Zammit and the secretary.
Mr Ciantar has never admitted that the council's financial problems are mainly connected to the "unplanned spending on the culvert", they said.
Furthermore, he even praised the abusive work and said it was having positive results, they continued.
The Nationalist MPs appealed to Mr Ciantar to stick to concrete facts and start work to resolve the flooding problems in the area as soon as possible.
They also appealed to the MLP to take the necessary steps against the former mayor and not approve his appointment as secretary of the Zebbug MLP committee.
With its silence and approval of the appointment, the MLP was approving the irresponsibility of the former mayor, the PN said.
The PN has expressed its solidarity with Zebbug residents, who have suffered dangerous consequences - "fruit of the mistaken and abusive decisions" taken.
