Over 200 women and a few men yesterday walked along the Sliema promenade to raise awareness that lifestyle changes and exercise could help minimise the risk of breast cancer.
The Walk for Health was organised by the Health Promotion Department as part of Breast Awareness Week activities, in collaboration with the Breast Care Support Group and supported by the European Union together with Marks and Spencer, which handed 200 T-shirts to those who joined in the walk.
The message of the department is that while there is still no cure to the disease, early detection was the best defence in reducing the mortality rate of breast cancer.
Research shows that every woman can lower her risk of developing the disease or succumbing to it by minimising lifestyle risk factors.
Current studies show that physical activity, combined with a healthy weight, can reduce the risk of breast cancer and the walk was intended to raise awareness on the significance of healthy lifestyles.
San Michel provided the water while the Girl Guides distributed pink ribbons for everyone who joined in the walk which started from Spinola Bay to Ghar id-Dud.
