Concern at detention centres' conditions

The students' organisation Move! said it was concerned at the conditions of detention centres for illegal immigrants and the way immigrants are treated in Malta.

Move! said Alvaro Gil-Robles, the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights who visited Malta remarked that the detention centres here were "shocking" and "needed serious action".

"Detention centres are a national embarrassment, which need to be tackled now, without any further delay," the organisation said.

It also urged the government to ensure decent living conditions for illegal immigrants and a positive future for them, whether in Malta or not.
