Libyan prime minister Shoukri Ghanen will be in Malta next week on an official visit.

The Libyan prime minister was quoted by the Labour Party as saying he would discuss outstanding issues between the two countries now that Malta was becoming an EU member.

Dr Sant, who is on a visit to Libya accompanied by MLP agriculture spokesman Noel Farrugia, explained the Labour Party's present and future position on the EU now that Malta was becoming a member.

The MLP said Dr Sant also met Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. They discussed Malta's and the MLP's commitment for better political and economic cooperation in the Mediterranean and the MLP's commitment towards the strengthening of relations between Malta and Libya.

The Labour leader said Libya and the Libyans were willing to continue strengthening friendship, trade and cooperation links between the two countries.

They agreed that to achieve this aim it would be useful to continue launching new projects in political, economic and cultural sectors.

Dr Sant and Mr Farrugia also met foreign minister Abdu Alrahman Shalgum and Mohammed Majdoub, the secretary general of the Revolutionary Movement Committee (MKR).

The Labour leader expressed his party's solidarity with the people of Palestine and its belief in an international legal system based on rights and not power, under UN regulations. He invited Mr Majdoub to send an MKR delegation to the MLP's general conference in November.
