Appreciation - Dr Anthony Lanfranco MD, B.Sc., DTCD (Wales), FCCP

Chief Justice Emeritus Professor J.J. Cremona writes:

I mourn the loss of a fine gentleman, a distinguished physician and, above all, an old and dear friend.

He was a very cultured and accomplished gentleman of the old school, always kind, courteous, considerate and ready to help. His affable personality and sterling qualities of mind and heart endeared him to anyone who came in contact with him.

I know only too well his particular brand of humour. Once, having come down with influenza just a couple of days or so before the hearing of a very important European Court of Human Rights case in Strasbourg, I called him and anxiously asked whether I could go. He promptly replied: "Of course you can." There was a pause. Then, with a twinkle in his eye, he added: "But you have not asked me whether you'll come back." The point was taken.

He was also a distinguished physician with a brilliant career as a chest specialist. I understand he was quite a pioneer in this sector in Malta and his country owes him a debt of gratitude.

As council chairman of MMDNA, I also had the privilege of working with him for a number of years. All his colleagues and friends there greatly admired his consistently wise (and at times also witty) contributions to the discussion. His devotion to the cause of the sick and the ailing earned him the greatest respect all round.

Now, sadly, he is no more. But the memory of people like him indeed never dies.
