It is so irritating to watch the English language being repeatedly mutilated in speech as well as in print in a country like ours, that has been exposed to it for over two centuries. Sadly this is a reflection of the sorry state to which this language has been allowed to deteriorate and of the scant regard that is given to its correct usage.
One such linguistic transgression frequently encountered is the incorrect use of the phrase "with regards to", the latest being in the article on the illegal immigrants' plight (October 4).
At the risk of being accused of splitting hairs, allow me to point out that in the English language when one wants to draw attention to a person or thing, the correct way to do so is to use "regarding", "with regard to" or "as regards" but never "with regards to". The latter is only used correctly as an expression of friendliness and to convey one's compliments as, for instance, when one signs off a letter.
