How does the EU put into practice its principles on animal welfare?

The European Commission has assigned the protection of animal welfare to its Directorate General for Health and Consumers. This unit sets standards for the welfare of animals on the farm, during transport and at slaughter. It also provides scientific advice, prepares legislative drafts and carries out inspections and control to verify the correct implementation of laws.
