In May 2003, there were 7,321 persons registered unemployed with the Employment and Training Corporation and the unemployment rate that month stood at 5.1 per cent, unchanged from the rate a year earlier, the National Statistics Office said.
There was an increase of 167 persons in the labour supply over the previous year. However, the labour supply decreased by 524 persons compared to the preceding month.
Accordingly, the labour supply stood at 144,657 persons in May 2003. The full-time gainfully occupied population increased by 269 persons over May of last year but dropped by 365 over April 2003.
The number of self-employed persons increased by 31 persons over the last year and by 26 when compared to April 2003.
Public sector employment decreased by 433 in the 12 months to May 2003. Most of the decline on the public sector payroll occurred in the companies with public investment.
