John Buhagiar, of Birkirkara St Joseph, and Athleta Pembroke's Carol Galea further increased their leads in the overall classification with yet another victory in the second event of a 5K race series organised by Birkirkara SJ and the Birkirkara Local Council.

Notwithstanding the high winds prevailing at Ta' Qali's National Park, good times were still registered by some of the athletes.

Buhagiar had to wait until the last two kilometres to secure first place in 15:51 ahead of Libertas runner Gerald Grech (16:09). Drew Lang, of St Patrick's AC, was third, two seconds slower than Grech.

In the overall standings Lang still lies comfortably in second place behind Buhagiar but the next slot is highly contested by Peter Azzopardi (AS Libertas), Michael Gellel (St Patrick's) and David Galea (Mellieha AC).

In the ladies' race, Galea had a real battle on her hands. In-form Giselle Camilleri, of St Patrick's, was runner-up on the day by only seven seconds in 17:47. Lisa Marie Camilleri, of AS Libertas, outran Cecilia Fenech to clinch third place in 19:01.

Meanwhile, Mellieha AC have managed to go top of the teams' table with 1,173 points, three ahead of St Patrick's. Birkirkara SJ are third with 1,158.

The remaining race in the series will be held on December 13.
