A procession with the statues of St Francis of Assisi and St Claire, said to be a first in Malta, was held in Sliema yesterday by the parish of the Sacro Cuor. It marked the liturgical feast of St Francis and the opening of the year marking the 750th anniversary of the death of St Claire, the first head of the Sisters of St Claire, an order founded by St Francis in the 11th century.

Children who took part in the procession wore white T-shirts and carried balloons and flags of peace. The blessing of animals, an annual event in the parish, was held afterwards.
