Malta Young Sailors Club members in Perugia regatta
Sean Borg first in Optimist cadet class
A team from the Malta Young Sailors Club have just returned from a regatta in Lago Trasemeno, Perugia, following an invitation from the Club Velico Castiglionese.
This invitation was made possible after Benji Borg's impressive fifth position in the European Optimist Championships held in Croatia this summer.
This event attracted top sailors from numerous Italian clubs as it formed part of the ranking selection for the Italy national team.
Under the supervision of experienced coach Jean-Paul Fleri Soler, six sailors participated in the Perugia regatta.
In the Optimist cadet class (U-12), Sean Borg and Gabriel Pace placed first and third respectively. In all, there was a total of 44 sailors from Italy, San Marino, Tunisia and the UAE taking part.
In the Optimist seniors class (U-16), Benji Borg placed eighth while William Camilleri finished 37th in a 90-sailor entry list.
Matthew Fleri Soler and Christophe Podesta represented Malta in the Laser 4.7 class, completing the regatta in seventh and ninth place respectively.
Fleri Soler's performance was marred by a lack of wind in the second race, after initially placing first in the first race.
Both Fleri Soler and Podesta were the youngest sailors in the Laser fleet of 30 participants, having moved up to this category only two months ago.
Besides the valuable experience of racing in an international event, the Malta Young Sailors Club members also took the opportunity to invite the top sailors from the participating countries to compete in the forthcoming EuroMed Championships in Malta between December 14 and 21.
