At present there are 37 twinning agreements involving 33 local councils, Parliamentary Secretary Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici said yesterday.

Speaking at the seminar in Mellieha on town twinning to mark the 40th anniversary of the Elysee Treaty, Dr Mifsud Bonnici explained that the twinning agreements vary from twinning with towns and villages from Sicily to the US and, in the case of the Sta Lucija council, to China.

"Twinning activities certainly offer citizens a real opportunity to get involved in the European integration process, thus making the creation of a true people's Europe possible," he said. "I am certain that the accession of Malta into the EU next May will boost this involvement."
