Lm63,000 damages for traffic fatality

A court yesterday awarded over Lm63,000 in damages to the family of a man who was killed in a car accident.

The heirs of Alexander Galea had filed a writ for damages against Silvio Piscopo requesting that he be found responsible for Galea's death in a 1991 Msida traffic accident.

Mr Justice Philip Sciberras, in the First Hall of the Civil Court, heard that Galea was driving his motorcycle in Birkirkara Road when he was hit by a car driven by Piscopo.

It resulted that Piscopo had turned his car and that as a result the two vehicles collided.

However, Galea was also partly to blame for the accident because of the speed at which he was driving.

The court therefore concluded that Piscopo bore two-thirds responsibility for the accident, while Galea bore one-third of the responsibility.

Piscopo was ordered to pay Galea's heirs Lm63,100 in damages.
