Unemployment in the 15 EU member states stood at eight per cent - or 14.3 million people - in August, unchanged from July, the Malta-EU Information Centre said, quoting Eurostat figures. A year earlier unemployment was 7.7 per cent.
Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union based in Luxembourg.
The lowest rate of unemployment, 3.8 per cent, was in Luxembourg, while the highest, 11.4 per cent, was in Spain.
In Malta, the latest statistics available from the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) show that in April the registered unemployed persons stood at 5.2 per cent.
The Labour Force Survey (LFS) carried out between March 17 - 23 by the National Statistics Office showed the number of those seeking work in March numbered 10,586, or 6.6 per cent.
