The Aquatic Sports Association (ASA) this week lured to its fold Russian coach Oleg Kreker. He will be in charge of the Maltese national swimming team along with former Malta swimmer Gail Rizzo.

Swimming Board chairman Michael Gialanze yesterday told The Times that the association had just decided to split the national squad into two groups - A and B.

The senior squad, which includes the established swimmers, will be under the guidance of the 25-year-old Kreker. The Youth Development team, in the B group, will be composed of promising U-15 swimmers from local clubs. They will be coached by Rizzo.

Kreker is a former coach at Russia's St Petersburg swimming club. He had been residing in Malta for the past three years and was approached by the ASA after Attila Selmeci's tenure as national coach came to an end last June. Kreker's contract will be reviewed by the ASA in January.
