The German-Maltese Circle and the Alliance Francaise de Malte, with the support of German Ambassador Georg Merten and French Ambassador Patrick Chrismant, will be holding two events aimed at commemorating the 40 years of the Elysée Treaty.

Having fought three times, including in two World Wars, in just 70 years, Germany and France signed in 1963 a Treaty of Friendship.

Concluded by Konrad Adenauer and Charles de Gaulle, the Elysée Treaty ended centuries of rivalry between the two countries, committing them to consult on foreign policy, to meet regularly and to implement a host of defence, cultural and other initiatives aimed at transforming bilateral relations.

A half-day seminar on the subject of town twinnings will take place in Mellieha tomorrow, to which the mayor of Adenau, Germany, Bernd Schiffarth, and the mayor of Sillery, France, Jacques Douadi have been invited.

Another event will take place on November 4 when three silent French films, "Paris qui dort", "A propos de Nice" and "Les Gitans", will be screened at a cinema in Valletta accompanied by an original music score written and conducted by German composer Guenter Buchwald.

The music will be played live by five Maltese musicians. This event will also form part of the annual European Film Festival.

Tickets for the event will shortly be available from the offices of the German-Maltese Circle in Valletta and of the Alliance Francaise de Malte in Floriana.
