The dockyard and productivity
When are we going to stop kidding ourselves about the dockyard's situation?
The interest of the workers is diametrically opposed to that of the management. Why finish a job on time when you can earn more by delaying and working overtime?
There is no fear of being sacked because the government is dead scared of closing the 'yard.
The 'yard workers were not interested in productivity as they are in easy street. Who in private industry would get away with what they do? The problem is a spineless government that is afraid of industrial strife.
The problem is cheap labour in the east but you do not fight cheap labour by inefficient labour. The only way we can fight cheap labour is to be cleverer than they are. Subsidising non-cooperative labour just brings bigger losses.
We are in a financial bind, once we could afford to carry a few parasites, but it is time to take the worming tablets. If you cannot produce then you should join the ranks of the pensioners.
They do not produce but at least they do not obstruct.
While we are on the subject. I think all public sector workers should be classified to see if they are productive. If not they should be retired early.
A non-productive worker is not just a benign parasite but a pathogenic one.
In the coming hard times we can still afford to carry passengers; we just have to ask them to carry less luggage.
