A set of three stamps dedicated to sailing was issued yesterday by the Maltapost Philatelic Bureau.

The stamps, with face values of 8c, 22c and 35c, were designed by Francis X. Ancilleri.

The 8c stamp depicts the Malta-Syracuse Race, which is organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club and the Lega Navale Italiana, Sezione Siracusa. This year's was the 43rd edition. In the race the start and finish lines alternate between Malta and Syracuse each year.

The Middle Sea Race is shown on the 22c stamp. This race has been rightfully described as one of the oldest and toughest offshore yacht racing classics: a 609-mile race that takes the fleet in an anti-clockwise direction around the neighbouring island of Sicily.

Organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club and held at the end of the northern hemisphere racing season, the race starts and finishes from a line in Marsamxett Harbour, one of the historic ports of Malta. The Royal Malta Yacht Club and the Royal Ocean Racing Club co-founded the race in 1968, and 2003 will be the 24th edition.

The third stamp in the issue, the 35c, is dedicated to the Royal Malta Yacht Club, which enjoys immense respect around the world.
