Delegates from over 60 countries met at the Sheraton Hotel in Perth, Western Australia, between August 31 and September 6 for the triennial meeting of the International Council of Women, during which decisions are taken for the next three years at national and international level.

The Malta National Council of Women was represented by its president, Grace Attard, who was appointed ICW newsletter editor for the next three years. Dr Anamah Tan of Singapore was elected president.

The theme for the next triennium is Women in Development with particular reference to the Girl-Child, Access to Clean Water and Poverty.

Important resolutions addressing current issues included the protection of maternity leave/breastfeeding, water security and its management, genetic engineering, financing for development, education of parents (submitted by NCW Malta), protection of women and children in armed conflict, trafficking of women and children, and transnational organised crime.
