Lm2.5m in stipends for sixth formers

Lm2.5 million were given out as stipends to sixth form students in the last scholastic year, Education Minister Louis Galea told Mr Carmelo Abela (MLP) in reply to a parliamentary question.

The minister said there were 5,200 post-secondary students who were eligible for maintenance grants. At the beginning of the scholastic year each student was given a credit card for Lm100 to buy books and other educational material. In all, Lm520,000 were given out to students in this way.

The students also received Lm40 monthly throughout the academic year.

Dr Galea said Lm1,764,377.79 were given out to students in government sixth forms, Lm221,262.29 to those in Church schools and Lm27,954.39 for students in independent schools.
