Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna has condemned the latest arson attack on the offices of the War Museum Association in Lower Fort St Elmo, saying it was only one in a series of shameful attacks on the premises of this association and the nearby War Museum.
All had gone unpunished, it noted.
These acts were only made possible by the total disinterest of the authorities in the fate of Lower Fort St Elmo, which had been left at the mercy of what the foundation termed as "illegal squatters" for over 30 years.
"The recent torching of the wartime archives at Lower Fort St Elmo is not only a shameful act but also one that clearly demonstrates our inherent incapacity as a nation to tackle an issue that has been staring us in the face for at least three decades. It also shows how spineless our entire political class has been throughout this period in doing exactly nothing about it," the foundation added.
It appealed to the government to take immediate steps to secure Lower Fort St Elmo from further vandalism and misuse.
