The Chinese cultural centre in Valletta was inaugurated yesterday with considerable pomp in the presence of local and Chinese dignitaries, who hailed it as a milestone in fostering cultural relations.

Situated at 173, Melita Street, the opening was attended by President Guido de Marco, Culture Minister Jesmond Mugliett, Chinese Ambassador Liu Zhengixu and Chinese Culture Vice-Minister Meng Xiaosi, ambassadors and Labour MPs, among others.

China has only five other such cultural centres worldwide. Malta was chosen to host a centre because of the countries' excellent relations going back 32 years.

The centre includes a language laboratory for the teaching of Chinese, a computer room where people can listen to Chinese music or watch Chinese films and videos, a digital library, a traditional library, an exhibition hall and a dance studio.

The Chinese cultural centre may be contacted on tel. 2122 5055 and by e-mail: maltaccc@ yahoo.com to obtain forms for membership and library cards.
