The heavy downpours have damaged St Joseph the Worker Secondary School, in Marsa and the Junior Lyceum, in tal-Handaq and the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools is working against the clock to ensure they are ready for the opening of the scholastic year on Monday, the Education Division said.

Water seeped into a number of classrooms at the Junior Lyceum and several window panes were smashed when a fireworks factory exploded nearby after being hit by lightning on Monday. The road leading to the school was also damaged by rainwater, the division said.

In Marsa, the damage was more serious, with water six feet deep having flooded the workshops, damaging equipment.

The division urged parents of pupils in both schools to keep a lookout for developments about the situation.

The division also referred to car free day, being marked on Monday, and said school transport will operate as normal to all schools. Parents who drive their children to school were still obliged to take their children there on time, the division said.
