When a marriage breaks down it is more difficult if custody of children is involved as the mother in almost all of the cases gets the child. I have to say that this is not always the right decision. My marriage broke down many years ago and the custody of our daughter had to be addressed.

I knew that if it went to court I would have had custody of her, knowing that in my case that decision of the courts would have been wrong. It was not that I would not have been able to look after her, but I knew deep down in my heart she would have been better off with her father and the family support that he would have been able to provide for her.

I too would have had support to provide for her but mine would not have been as constant of that of her dad's. But when children are young you will never know if the right decision were made until they grow into adults.

Now our daughter has grown into a beautiful young woman and in a recent conversation with her about the decisions we made she said we did make the right decision as she knew she was always loved and cared for by both her mother and father and by the large family that provided care for her. My point is that mums are not always the best for the children but dads can and are usually much more patient when they have custody.

Men are always perceived as the breadwinners who go out to work every morning and are late home at night. Women on the other hand are seen as the ones who stay at home and give love and attention to the child. Nowadays men can work from home and take a much more active role in the upbringing of their children.

So, please, let us give dads a chance as they make wonderful playmates, friends and parents for their children. They can do just as good a job at bringing up the children as the mums and sometimes a much better one too.
