The Labour Party yesterday expressed solidarity with port workers who are currently holding industrial action in protest against a proposed EU directive, which will enable ship owners to select workers to unload their ships.

Such work is currently done exclusively by the port workers. The directive has been the source of protests all over Europe.

The party expressed solidarity at a meeting between representatives of the General Workers' Union and Evarist Bartolo, opposition EU spokesman, and Joe Mizzi, spokesman on the infrastructure.

The Labour MPs said they would make contact with the Party of European Socialists for the European Parliament to work against this proposed directive coming into force.

They also criticised the government for not having met the GWU delegation to discuss the future of port workers.

Mr Mizzi said the government should keep its election promise to protect the interests of port workers if this directive was implemented.
