Decriminalising drugs

I refer to Jean Agius's letter (September 3). Thanks for correcting me Mr Agius. I did not really mean that drugs should be sold over the counter as if they were alcohol or cigarettes. In my opinion not even alcohol should be sold like that. I am sorry if my words misled anyone.

Maybe cannabis could be sold over the counter because this is a very soft drug, in fact less dangerous than alcohol.

But other drugs should be licensed and given to people as Mr Agius said - through special clinics.

The government should think about the profit it could make if it taxed them as it taxes cigarettes and alcohol.

Of course, the government could import drugs at the cheapest prices and sell them at reasonable prices, and, of course, they will be surely more pure than the ones that youngsters are getting today.

Fewer deaths would occur because drug addicts and people who take drugs occasionally, as some do with alcohol, would know what they are taking and what is in them.

Some may think that legalising drugs will cause great havoc and the percentage of drug addicts would increase.

But I am pretty sure this would not be so. For one reason, drugs can already be found very easily here and another reason is that only people who want to take drugs take them - I certainly do not think people who never thought of taking drugs and/or are totally against them will start doing so simply because they are legalised.

I am not a drug user. But I am just fed up with all this crime mainly because of drugs, and, if I may add, quarters that know they have lost the war on drugs and so join the other side. Just like the saying goes: "If you can't beat them, join them".
