Police fire warning shots

Mobile Squad police yesterday fired warning shots as they sought to arrest a driver who pointed a firearm in their direction and who was observed throwing sachets out of his car at Fgura.

Sources said drug squad police were searching some young people close to the Bocci Club in Fgura when they observed a car, a Volkswagen Golf, speed off when the driver saw them.

On seeing this the police tried to stop him but the man, who was well known to the police, pointed the firearm at the police and sped off. The sources said the warning shots were fired at this stage.

The car driver was also observed throwing several sachets out of the car window. The sources said it was suspected that the sachets contained heroin.

The assistance of the Mobile Squad was then requested to intercept the Volkswagen Golf, whose driver was arrested when he was intercepted by the mobile squad closeby.
