Skip owners yesterday morning blocked the entrance to the Maghtab landfill in protest over measures being taken by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, which had detailed its inspectors to ensure that rubbish being dumped in a Siggiewi quarry contains no household waste.

The quarry started receiving construction waste recently, which used to be channelled to the Maghtab dump. Waste which could pollute the environment is not accepted at the quarry.

Mepa said some truck drivers went to the quarry with skips containing mixed waste. In such cases, drivers were being instructed to separate the waste and while the construction waste was dumped at the quarry the rest was taken to Maghtab.

A spokesman for WasteServ Malta Ltd spokesman said the protest was lifted when skip owners realised that both sides were actively seeking a solution.

Skip owners submitted a number of proposals and these are being considered. A meeting between the skip owners and WasteServ is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

WasteServ was set up last January and is responsible for the government's waste management government's policy.
