The Badminton Association was recently invited by the European Badminton Union (EBU) to send two representatives to the EBU summer school in Ollerup, Denmark.

This is an annual event which the EBU has regularly organised for the past 22 years. It consists of a week of intensive training designed specifically for U-19 players and junior coaches.

Gordon Spence and Martin Andersen ran the summer school, together with seven coaches selected by the EBU. The event saw the participation of 45 players and 16 coaches from 17 different countries, ranging from Iceland to Israel and Belarus.

Participants trained and resided at the 'Gymnastikhojskolen' for the entire duration of the event. The premises are actually a specialised sports school equipped with 17 courts as well as other facilities.

The Maltese representatives were Christopher Spiteri and Norman Spiteri.

Christopher Spiteri forms part of the national squad. He has already represented Malta on several occasions during international junior tournaments organised locally by the association.

Norman Spiteri is the national juniors coach. He looks after the most promising players whom he regularly trains and prepares until they reach the required standard to join the senior team.

During the EBU summer school, both Spiteris received valuable insights into playing technique and tactics under the expert tuition of their respective coaches.

The Badminton Association expressed its satisfaction with the performance of the Maltese representatives at the summer school, auguring that the knowledge they acquired will now be passed on to the other players and coaches.

It thanked the European Badminton Union for the valuable opportunity provided and looked forward to further similar collaboration in future.
