The Malta Chess Federation (MCF) will hold the annual junior championships starting on Monday at the Russian Cultural Centre, Valletta.
All games start at 3 p.m. daily. Each player will be allowed two hours to finish. The tournament is valid for chess rating purposes. The competition is open to all residents under 20 years of age.
Juniors may apply by contacting the MCF secretary on 21-313798 email:mbaron@keyworld.net by Friday, September 12.
The 2002 winner was Daniel Abela. He will represent Malta in the European Junior Championship.
Meanwhile, the second stage of the 2003 championship, currently being played by 16 contestants, will continue during September.
Several juniors are participating after qualifying through the Preliminaries or by outstanding rating. The first four will join last year's champion and the runner-up in the finals due in October/ November.
The MCF also said that the next Rapid (15 minutes) tournament will be held at Farsons Brewery, Mriehel, on Sunday morning. The monthly Blitz (five minutes) event will be held on September 21.
The federation's annual general meeting will be held in the coming weeks when, in terms of the new statute, all members of the Council will be elected. The last AGM was held last December.
